Day #57 and The Secret History

So, I was able to get some issues out on the practice pad and that’s about it. I’m waiting for my pre-op appointment to determine which route we’re going: laparoscopic surgery to explore what the heck is going on inside. Possible partial hysterectomy (2 week recovery; keeping the ovaries). BUT, when all else fails, #drum. I hit the practice pad, set atop my snare and focused on the metronome, nothing else. 80bpm, really concentrating on breathing and left hand exercises. Nothing too fast, nothing too involved. Just meditative flow and repetition. I’m working on being precise even when slow (especially when slow) and really learning how to switch back and forth…

Day #52 and the Warm-Up Routine

Well, I think I’ve got it down to a nice 25 minutes. I find that I need to stretch first before launching into a warm-up routine on the practice pad, which I set on my snare. I usually move my legs to quarter-note beats with ankle weights while running through Drumeo’s “Best Routine” for the practice pad–which I like to start off with my lead hand and then switch to my left. Then, I go into the Intermediate warm-up (5 minutes) before playing a song or two and “jamming out,” which usually means pushing what I’m capable of doing and messing up a lot, but having tons of fun and…

    Day #37 and Office Breaks

Alright, with a borrowed practice pad and a stand, I’ve officially set up–theoretically–an office that allows for turning around to practice rudiments during breaks. Now, I haven’t actually put this to the test yet, because our cat threw up all over the office and I never made it in there. You might be wondering why I didn’t just move the practice pad and stand to the kitchen table where I had set up shop for the day. But that would have defeated the purpose of creating a practice space in the office; ah, the excuses we make for no reason at all. Today, my goal is to take ten minute breaks every hour to…

    Day #16

BEAT tired at the end of our first road trip day, but got out the practice pad and set myself up of on the floor of our BnB with sticks, pillow, and pad. Ran through a warm-up, rudiments, one song, and tried my best to grasp sticking patterns within quintuplets as demonstrated by Anika Nilles at 1am. IT STILL COUNTS. #practice #daily #drums We wound through Washington mountains and beautiful shimmering coastline. Cedars, a sleeping pup in the back seat, a car full of stuff from our #housesittingsummer and snacks all the way into a near-midnight arrival at our first stop. Wore my “Hit Like a Girl” t-shirt for the first…

    Day #15

Packing up to go home 🙁 Listening to Primus (our first show in Seattle this summer) while disassembling my electric kit to pack into the car for our drive “home” until returning to Seattle, our new home. Woo! But sad little parts strewn about the floor…saying goodbye to this temporary house-sitting gig is bittersweet. It’s been an amazingly musical summer, when what I thought I’d be here doing (writing) turned into joining a band, coupled with an insatiable need to improve my drumming. But, after two months, I finally started to clean–the day before leaving, of course–and found my original practice pad! So, in between cleaning the kitchen and bedrooms, I set…
